For the Week of July 21, 2014
Can you confirm that the new NCD for cardiac pacemakers is now in effect?
The national coverage determination (NCD) that includes new indications for pacemakers has been in effect since August 13, 2013 and remains in effect. This document replaces the old, separate criteria for single- and dual-chamber pacemakers are no longer applicable. However, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced a delay in implementation of the automated claims system changes defined in the NCD. It needs to review and address inquiries it has received about coding and billing. CMS stated that it would advise providers of the new implementation date in the near future.
For more information about coding and billing related to the NCD, see MM8525 at http://www.cms.gov/Outreach-and-Education/Medicare-Learning-Network-MLN/MLNMattersArticles/downloads/MM8525.pdf.
Thanks to Ronald Hirsch, MD of AccretivePAS® (http://accretivehealth.com/) for clarifying the above.
