Cardiology

For the Week of April 21, 2014

Question:

One of our physicians performed an ultrasound- and fluoroscopic-guided evaluation of a right chest wall hemangioma followed by alcohol sclerosis. What code would be assigned for the alcohol sclerosis? I don't see a code that would encompass a vascular body part.

Answer:

The following code should be assigned in addition to the modality-specific guidance code that was used with the sclerosis.

37241 Vascular embolization or occlusion, inclusive of all radiological supervision and interpretation, intraprocedural roadmapping, and imaging guidance necessary to complete the intervention; venous, other than hemorrhage (e.g., congenital or acquired venous malformations, venous and capillary hemangiomas, varices, varicoceles)
